Jolabokaflod

Iceland has a mesmerizing tradition of exchanging books on Christmas Eve. This is called Jolabokaflod. In fact, Iceland publishes more books per capita than any other country in the world.

It all began in World War II when the finances of Iceland were struggling. The natives found it difficult to follow the basic tradition of gifting on Christmas and books gave start to a fresh tradition in Iceland. So, some families buy selective books for the family members and other families swap the books from each other’s collections as per choice or recommendation.

An interesting fact is that 93 per cent of Icelanders read at least one book in a year. One in ten people in the Nordic country publish a book in their lifetime. Reykjavik was also termed the UNESCO City of Literature in the year 2011. In spite of the e-books making way into the best economies in the world, they have never succeeded to make their ways into Iceland. It ranks third as the most literate country in the world after Finland and Norway?
