General Sam Manekshaw

He had confidently stated that had he opted for Pakistan during the partition, Pakistan would have won the 1971 war.

The first ever Field Marshal and the greatest General of India, Sam Hormusji Famji Jamshedji Manekshaw had led India to the glorious win in 1971 Indo-Pak war. He was a man who was larger than life, heroic, supremely charismatic and prominently rebellious.

Born in Amritsar to a Parsi family on April 3, 1941, he rebelled against his father, joined the army and spent four decades, including five wars, playing a major catalytic role in the history of contemporary India. He managed to cheat death on few instances and his wit kept his squad always happy. He is the one who openly stated to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi that the Indian Army would face an inevitable defeat if the war was fought in April 1971 against East Pakistan; he trained the army and the war commenced on December 1971 after he completed his training.

He served as the Captain during the World War II in Burma 1942. He never quit his duties even after being shot by 9 bullets in his stomach when the Japanese Army invaded the Pagoda Hill. After pursuing the Eighth Staff Course in 1943, held the portfolio of Brigadier Major in Razmak Brigade until October 1944. During the Indo-China war and the end of World War II he succeeded in repatriating about 10,000 Prisoners of War (POW). As a commandant he headed Jammu and Kashmir and also the corps of the North-East.
